Ganoga Falls is the tallest of 22 waterfalls at Ricketts Glen State Park.

Nestled in northeastern Pennsylvania’s Endless Mountains, Ricketts Glen State Park spans over 13,000 acres of lush forests, rocky ravines, and stunning lakes. But most visitors head there for one reason: waterfalls. The legendary Falls Trail, winds through the Glens Natural Area and boasts 22 named, free-flowing waterfalls. It’s such a treasure, that it was deemed a National Natural Landmark.

The Falls Trail & Waterfalls

The most iconic hiking route at Ricketts Glen is the Falls Trail System, a challenging 7.2‑mile loop that delivers an unforgettable waterfall experience. The hiking is fairly rugged and has significant elevation change, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time if you plant to hike the entire trail. If you’ve got hiking poles, they will no doubt come in handy.

Also budget time to stop frequently if you like to take photos, because the scenery is so amazing everywhere you look. This park has gorgeous old-growth forest with blankets of green moss.

If you don’t think you’re up for the entire loop hike to see all of the waterfalls, consider doing an out-and-back trek down to Ganoga Falls, the tallest waterfall in the park. Ganoga is 94 feet and is worth the work to hike down to get an up-close view. You’ll pass a few more smaller waterfalls on the way, all while enjoying the background music of the flowing water.

Prepare yourself for slippery rocks, steep staircases, and uneven paths. Wear hiking shoes with good, grippy treads and walk at a slower pace, making sure you have solid footing for each step.

Other Activities at Ricketts Glen

  • Hiking: Ricketts Glen has more than 26 miles of hiking trails, so trail lovers will be hiking heaven.

  • Water Sports: The 245‑acre Lake Jean is perfect for boating, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing.

  • Camping & Lodging: If you have more than a day-trip’s time, why not stay over? There are 120 campsites for tents or RVs, as well as rustic cabins.

Tips for a Good Visit

Ricketts Glen is extremely popular, especially the Falls Trail. If you are visiting in the summer, expect crowded parking lots and trails. If you want to avoid the crowds, consider visiting mid-week or during shoulder seasons. If you are visiting in peak times, try to hit the trail early.

This park is remote and wild, so don’t rely on cell phones for communication or maps. Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks. In the warmer months, bring bug spray and do a tick check after any hikes.

Waterproof hiking shoes with good ankle support will help you traverse the terrain. Before heading out for your adventure, check the local forecasts and avoid outdoor activity during thunderstorms. Always tell someone your outdoor plans and an estimated time for your return.

Ricketts Glen is one of the most beautiful natural spaces in Pennsylvania that you will no doubt want to visit again and again.
